We are pleased to conclude our journey through the depths of oceanic history with the Maritime Workshop - From Archives to Actions, which took place on June 25-26, 2024 at the Institute of Slavic Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw, Poland.
Over two enriching days, we embarked on a captivating odyssey into the maritime past, exploring various facets from historical practices to practical applications in the digital age. Our workshop began with an exploration of the maritime history of Gdansk in the late Middle Ages, navigated through the interconnections of the Baltic Sea and the Atlantic in the early modern period and encountered the dangers of maritime predation in the Portuguese Atlantic. We also explored the voyages of natural history in the Indian Ocean and traveled around the globe with the Portuguese merchant navy to explore their dynamic interactions across continents. On the second day, we moved on to the practical aspects and engaged with databases ranging from maritime archeology to slave voyages to gain quantitative and qualitative insights that enrich our understanding of maritime history.
The workshop was led by esteemed speakers and experts who shared their profound knowledge and research findings with us, stimulating insightful discussions and a lively exchange of ideas. From examining historical archives to using digital tools, each session illuminated new perspectives and opened doors for further exploration of maritime studies.
